Staircase Remodel
Staircase Remodel – Denver, CO – 2008. We began this project by removing the original pine lumber staircase from the 1970s. With a new hickory floor already installed, we chose to use a combination of red oak treads and knotty alder stringers and handrails. To maintain consistency, we replaced all existing trim in the rest of the home with distressed knotty alder.
The original stairway was very narrow and restricted by the entry door location. To address this, we replaced the failing door with a stainable fiberglass door by Therma-Tru, allowing more space for a wider stair. The treads were hand-scraped and stained to match the floor. The wall finish features a hand-troweled texture with a golden antique color wash, complementing the overall aesthetic. As time passed and the client’s dog aged, we added a carpet runner to make it easier for her to navigate the stairs.
