Turquoise Bookshelf

Bookshelf and Library Ladder Build – 2023. This project began with a meeting to understand the clients’ ideas and needs. They requested a bookshelf with a liquor cabinet and a library ladder. After discussing the budget, space restrictions, and how the design would complement the open floor plan-including the kitchen, living room, dining area, and lofted balcony-we explored our options. The space available was 15 feet tall by 4 feet wide and shared a walkway to a powder room, necessitating the library ladder’s placement in the middle of this pathway.

Given the budget constraints, we needed creative solutions for materials and methods. The area already featured statement pieces and colorful art prints, so our design had to stand out without creating a cluttered effect. We decided to pull the turquoise color from an oversized ficus tree pot, creating a faux effect of actual turquoise gemstone to maintain a cohesive look. We chose 21⁄2 inch thick shelving that we fabricated from old reclaimed Douglas Fir, providing an elegant and rustic appearance.

Recessed mounted COB dimmable LED lighting was integrated into the shelves to add a modern touch and highlight the rustic wood. For the liquor cabinet, we included two metal grated cabinet doors with interior LED lighting that creates a beautiful ambiance with the glass bottles and stemware, adding to the rustic charm while providing functionality. The 9-foot retractable rolling library ladder, made from the same reclaimed wood as the bookshelf, ensured easy access to all shelves while maintaining a cohesive look.

The final result was stunning. The 15-foot tall structure seamlessly blended with the existing décor while standing out as a unique feature. The combination of reclaimed wood, dimmable LED lighting, and a retractable rolling library ladder not only met the clients’ needs but also exceeded their expectations.
